The third in our Fictional Crushes series wherein J & K discuss the fictional characters who make them swoon. Check out our literary picks here and our video game choices here. Today’s characters come from the cinema world!
J Anyone who knows me knows I love the movie Burlesque. Cher and Christina Aguilera…what more do you need? My first movie crush is the adorable bartender Jack, played by Cam Gigandet. He’s far from perfect, but he gets it right in the end. A talented musician with a delightful spontaneous streak, Jack will always be at or near the top of my list.
My second movie crush was a princess’s only hope, a wise mentor, a loyal friend, and a fierce warrior. Who has those impressive credentials? Why, Obi-Wan Kenobi, of course. Good looks aside, Obi-Wan has a heart of gold (or perhaps kyber crystal). He has strong principles and stands by them, but is not quick to judge. Unless, of course, he’s forced to use a blaster. So uncivilized.
K You want to know my movie character crushes? As you wish. This is true love – You think this happens every day? If you haven’t figured it out by now, my first character is Westley from the cult classic The Princess Bride. Maybe it was because I first saw him at a sleepover in middle school. But this character had it all – he could fight either handed with a sword, was devoted to his love (“I will always come for you”), had witty one-liners, dashing good looks, brains and strength.
Second is so hard to choose. Is it the swashbuckling Wil Turner from Pirates of the Caribbean? Is it Legolas from Lord of the Rings? (I’m really just picking Orlando Bloom, aren’t I?). No, I think it’s Aragorn. Book Aragorn was cool but movie Aragorn had the whole Arwen love plot and I’m a sucker for having the Appendix of JRRT’s expanded so beautifully. Aragorn was already in love with Arwen and nothing, not even Eowyn fawning over him, distracted him from that. He can sing. He resisted the lure of taking the one ring! Fully dedicated to his friends, he refused to leave Merry and Pippin dead and followed the Uruk-hai. He can heal (Frodo after the Nazgul blade). Courageous, strong, a fierce protector, a leader. He will not let evil win. For Frodo!!
