Brat summer has ended. A new season awaits its christening. What sounds will define the fall season? We can’t predict the future, but we can recommend some current and past jams that pair well with jack-o-lanterns, apple cider, and a brisk breeze. Behold our list of autumn anthems: songs for the fall.
“Casual” by Chappell Roan
We would be remiss to not include something from the artist who took the world by storm this year. “Casual” melds mid-tempo softness with biting lyrics that ask where the line is drawn between casual and serious. Knee-deep in the passenger seat, perhaps. Best listened to on a rainy day while pondering your current situationship. Watch the music video here.
“Grand Theft Autumn” by Fall Out Boy
Autumn is literally in the title, but it’s also Jonathan’s favorite Fall Out Boy song. There’s an aura of nostalgia commingled with pragmatism that makes this punk-pop confection irresistible. Watch the music video here.
“Honesty” by Nelly Furtado
Be honest: did you know Nelly Furtado released a new album this year? The pop songstress has enjoyed a renaissance thanks to her high-profile electronic collaborations (see “Eat Your Man” and “Love Bites“) but has also returned to her core genre. “Honesty” is the pumpkin spice latte of pop songs: sweet, upbeat, and easy to love. Listen here.
“The Ballad of the Witches’ Road” by the Agatha All Along Cast
If you haven’t watched Agatha All Along yet, finish reading, and then please go do so. It is campy, dark, and witchy. What more could you want for spooky season? Also, we’re still not over Patti LuPone being part of it. Listen to the show’s anthem here and prepare to play it again and again.
“Taste” by Sabrina Carpenter
We all know how infamous “Locktober” is for couples to hard launch. Sabrina Carpenter’s sassy track acknowledges an ex’s new relationship with a reminder that someone else got there first. The pop star’s penchant for clever turns of phrase is on full display in this gem, and the music video is bloody and campy like a classic horror flick. Did we mention she kisses Jenna Ortega? Go watch the video here.
