Fans of Mike White’s resort-hopping series are drawn to its complex, interwoven storylines that serve drama and suspense. There’s also the allure of the show’s glamorous settings and ensemble casts. What books successfully blend all of those elements? We’d be remiss not to recommend something by the queen of murder-mystery: Agatha Christie. Her seminal classic And Then There Were None remains one of the finest examples of the genre. In it, a group of strangers is invited to an island mansion. Once there, they realize there is a killer among them, and only by revealing their darkest secrets can they hope to divine which of them it is. Do those elements sound familiar? This page-turner will keep you guessing right up until its ending. (Note: We caution readers that this book is quite old and parts of it have not aged well)

Severance

This dark sci-fi thriller has taken the Internet by storm with its twisted but somehow believable premise. Splashes of absurdity relieve the moody atmosphere as the show hurtles toward mind-bending revelations. Readers should look no further than Ray Bradbury’s The Illustrated Man for episodic, edgy sci-fi in literary format. This anthology of stories from one of sci-fi’s greatest authors delivers the same unsettling feeling that its grim depictions of the future might not be so far from reality. From burning forbidden books to the prospect of nuclear war, The Illustrated Man is a timeless classic, just as Severance likely will be.

The Wheel of Time

Amazon took on a monumental task in adapting Robert Jordan’s epic fantasy series The Wheel of Time (WoT) for television. There’s been no shortage of controversy about the showrunners’ choices, but accurate or not, WoT remains an engaging, well-made production. What book features an ensemble cast, a unique magic system, and an expansive world? Ours, of course. Trials of the Innermost blends fantasy with sci-fi elements, just like WoT, and it marries them with complex characters and interwoven storylines. And with book two of The Etherea Cycle on the way, there’s even more adventure waiting.
